Comprehensive Exam
For Master's Students in the HED Program
Virginia Tech
Second year master's students are required to complete an independent study and pass an oral comprehensive exam as the capstone experience. The following information will held you plan, organize, and complete this task.
Please read the Guide completely and refer to the sample independent studies as you begin your work. All of these files are in PDF format and be read on-line or printed for your convenience. Pay particular attention to the timeline contained in the Guide. The second year of study can pass by very quickly and Graduate School deadlines are not negotiable.

Also be advised that the following dates have already been held for your comprehensive exams. The exam should take no more than two hours but must be scheduled three weeks in advance. Remember too, that final drafts of papers must be approved by your on-site supervisor and your committee chair before the exam may be scheduled. Exam dates will be scheduled on a first-come first-served basis.
