Students are encouraged to share class notes and discuss issues and required readings with each other. Written assignments, however, should be the sole work of the author and referenced accordingly. The honor code at Virginia Tech applies to all written assignments (i.e., tests, papers, briefs, etc.). Tips on how to comply with this code can be found at http://ghs.grads.vt.edu/student/index.html. The Virginia Tech Honor Pledge is, "I have neither given nor received unauthorized assistance on this assignment" and should appear on all written work.
Definitions for cheating, plagiarism, falsification, academic sabotage, and misconduct in research and teaching may be found by reading the corresponding title found below. Students are also encouraged to read the Graduate Catalog and the Constitution of the Virginia Tech Graduate Honor System.
Do not take this part of the syllabus lightly. Dozens of cases of plagiarism have been reported recently. They have involved students, faculty, and administrators. All can result in the revocation of a degree or the end of an academic career. Most academic dishonesty is deliberate but occasionally, accidents can happen. Reviewing and understanding these sections of the syllabus will put you in a much better position to avoid these unpleasant situations.
